General Club Information

Message from the President

It’s hard to think of snow and skiing at the end of August, but Winter is coming and it will be time to tune up our skis and try to find our winter gear.
On behalf of the club—Thank You! to Marg Yarwood (Past President) and other executive and committee members who have worked so hard over the years to make our club a success.
Thanks also to current volunteers, committee members, trip coordinators and executive. Your work is very much appreciated.

Jeff Roger

President

Monthly Newsletter

The monthly newsletter is mailed to all members and includes the names of the coordinators for each trip, information on any last minute changes to the Winter Scene and general information, items for sale, articles and notices regarding club social events. “Editor-in-Chief” Lorraine Elliott would appreciate receiving any suitable items of interest to club members for inclusion in the newsletter. Her e-mail address is http://www.nordicwrecksnewsletter@shaw.ca.

 Safety and Etiquette

 Safety
Being aware of potential problems and being capable of dealing with these problems is a part of every member’s responsibility in any outdoor activity. Following is a brief list of items that you should consider carrying with you at all times:

basic first aid supplies            extra gloves and socks

                        electric tape                         whistle

                        ample water
Remember:

v     Use a ski bag for skis and poles with your name clearly marked on the bag.

 Clothing

Weather in the mountains can change radically in a short time, so make sure to:

v     carry a backpack and enough clothing to cover everything from sub-zero to balmy.

v     carry water.

v     dress in layers that can be easily peeled off or put back on, as the weather changes and you heat up with strenuous exercise.

v     always carry a waterproof jacket, toque, gloves and an extra pair of warm socks. Remember that most of the heat loss in cold weather is from your head. Cotton absorbs water readily and loses its insulating power, so jeans and corduroy should not be worn. Wool also absorbs water but retains most of its insulating power. Synthetics absorb less water, dry faster, are lightweight, shed snow easily and are an excellent shell fabric. You may need more or less equipment, depending on the extent of your trip.

 Etiquette

The following guidelines apply to all trips, whether organized by the club or as separate outings. Where there is an appointed trip coordinator, his/her decisions about the well being of the group are final.

v     Stay with your group at all times. Keep an eye on those behind you, especially at trail intersections.

v     Watch for any signs of distress, fatigue or cold in other group members.

v     Two skiers meeting head-on pass to the right of each other. Give skiers coming down the hill the right-of-way.

v     If you wish to pass a skier on the trail shout ‘TRACK’.

v     Do not block the trail by skiing two or more abreast. Keep to the right on a two-way trail.

v     Fill all sitzmarks and holes made by you.

v     Plan rest stops to gather the group together. Make sure everyone is accounted for.

Always follow the ‘buddy system’ – NEVER SKI ALONE!

Rentals

Rental ski equipment is available at the Manning Park Resort but you will be left to ski to the Lightning Lake area or take the resort shuttle bus as our bus cannot wait for people to get rental ski equipment. Please notify the trip coordinator prior to the trip if you require rental equipment.
